Beta Theta Pi Leadership Development Opportunities
Beta Theta Pi believes in self governance. However, self governance only applies so long as the active chapter can demonstrate that it can take the responsibility to govern itself. If it can't, then a higher authority (i.e., the University or the General Fraternity) will have to step in and take measures to rectify the problem. With this in mind, the Delta Sigma Colony is organized in the following manner which helps to ensure that we stay a self-governing chapter:
The Beta Wilderness Challenge
Relatively new to the general fraternity, the Beta Wilderness Challenge takes a handful of initiated brothers in partnership with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) and allows participants to learn leadership, self-awareness, communication, an array of outdoor skills and, most importantly, how the Ritual applies to their daily lives. Brothers spend a week in the Wilderness together with a handful of other brothers from other chapters and apply the teachings of Beta Theta Pi to their experience.
The Beta Wilderness Challenge has received the Excellence in Educational Programming Award from the Association of Fraternity Advisors (2003) and the Best Use of a Foundation Grant Award from the North-American Inter-fraternity Conference Foundation Seminar (2008.)
Futures Quest
Futures Quest is a program for the newly initiated Brothers of Beta Theta Pi within the first year of their active tenure. Open to all mens Greek fraternities, Futures Quest is a two day summit which focuses on leadership skills, personal styles, and development.
Keystone Conferences
The Keystone Regional Leadership Conferences provide newly appointed executive members of Beta Theta Pi chapters nationwide with the tools they will need to create positive progress and leadership amongst their chapters. Featuring separate sessions for regions throughout the US and Canada, it holds seminars and intense workshops designed not only for the general exec board, but for each individual officer as well. It aims at giving the executive committee the leadership and communication skills they will need to bring back and lead their chapters with.
Over the course of two days, officers work with other officers from different chapters to learn the strengths and weaknesses and similarities of each chapter in an effort to learn from each other and build stronger foundations for their individual chapters to grow.
This program received the Excellence in Educational Programming Award from the Association of Fraternity Advisors in 2008.
General Convention
Beta Theta Pi is one of the only fraternities to hold a yearly convention. This cherished and extravagant event is held in varying locations throughout the United States and Canada, and hosts up to 1,000 Beta Actives and Alumni, and provides them with workshops for leadership development, networking opportunities, and celebration of the strong Brotherhood Beta is known for. The National Convention also provides an opportunity to assemble the governing body of Beta Theta Pi.
Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute
The Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute is a five day summit held during the summer which hosts participants from the entire Greek community nationwide. Hosted by the North American Inter-fraternity Conference (NIC), UIFI provides coeducational experience that focuses on personal and chapter values, leadership development, team building and the art of building community.
Chapter Presidents Leadership Academy
The Miller Nichols Chapter Presidents Leadership Academy is a three day yearly summit for general chapter presidents of Beta Theta Pi. It provides them with intense leadership training and networking with other chapter presidents and focuses on creating stronger, more effective leaders. CPLA creates more effective leaders, who develop personal officer goals and design a framework for chapter success. The curriculum also includes reviewing Standard Chapter Operating Expectations and networking with top university professionals, General Fraternity volunteers and Administrative Office staff.
This Academy has been the recipient of many awards, including the HRH Fellow for Educational Program Development Award from the Fraternity Executives Association (2005), the Most Outstanding Use of a Foundation Grant Award from the North-American Inter-fraternity Conference (2005) and the Excellence in Educational Programming Award from the Association of Fraternity Advisors (2006).
The Wooden Institute
The John and Nellie Wooden Institute for Men of Principle is an incredible opportunity for initiated Betas that focuses on the ritual of Beta Theta Pi and becoming a better leader. The Wooden Institute allows Betas to interact with brothers and Friends of Beta from across North America. Participants share ideas, dissect Fraternity ritual, partake in challenging activities that focus on leadership skills, learn more about the history of Beta Theta Pi and reflect on the Fraternity’s heritage. The institute is held in Oxford, the site of Beta Theta Pi’s founding.
The Wooden Institute was endowed and named by Carol and James A. Collins, UCLA '50 in honor of legendary coach John R. Wooden, Purdue '32 and his beloved wife Nellie.
This program received the Most Outstanding Use of a Foundation Grant Award from the North-American Inter-fraternity Conference in 1999.
